Hyaluronic acid or Botox, what should I choose?

Hyaluronic acid or Botox

One of the most common concerns of those seeking a facial treatment for a youthful and fresh appearance is which treatment to choose. Hyaluronic acid and Botox are among the most popular treatments performed in aesthetic dermatology. They aim to improve facial features but differ in the way they work, the duration, the type of wrinkles they treat and of course the final result.

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in our body that has the ability to retain large amounts of water in the skin. This characteristic provides hydration, elasticity and firmness. However, over time, its production decreases, causing the skin to lose volume and show signs of aging.

Where can Hyaluronic Acid be applied?

  • In deep facial wrinkles, such as nasolabial folds.
  • Fine wrinkles, e.g. wrinkles from smoking or around the corners of the mouth.
  • On the lips, to improve the contour or add volume.
  • In facial contouring, for example, to increase cheekbones.
  • In atrophic scars or dents on the body.

What is Botox?

Botox (or botulinum toxin type A) is a substance that causes temporary relaxation of facial muscles. Although it is used in many medical treatments, it is best known for its cosmetic applications. Essentially, it combats wrinkles caused by facial expressions, such as wrinkles on the forehead, around the eyes and between the eyebrows (interbrow).

Hyaluronic Acid and Botox: What are the main differences?

The main difference between these two treatments is that hyaluronic acid provides volume and hydration, while Botox relaxes the muscles that cause expression lines. Therefore, the choice of treatment depends on the needs of your face:

  • Hyaluronic Acid: Ideal for static wrinkles (that remain even without facial movement), for enhancing volume in lips and cheekbones, and for deep hydration.
  • Botox: Ideal for dynamic wrinkles (which only appear when we express emotions, such as laughter or a look of surprise).

Can these treatments be combined?

In some cases, for a complete result, the two treatments can be combined. Botox can smooth dynamic wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes, while hyaluronic acid can add volume to the cheekbones or lips. Thus, a harmonious and powerful renewal of the facial appearance is achieved.

Hyaluronic Acid vs Botox: Advantages and Disadvantages

Hyaluronic Acid – Advantages:

  • Immediate results: Changes are visible immediately, providing volume and hydration.
  • Natural result: Does not alter the natural facial expressions.
  • Hydration: Keeps the skin hydrated and provides a radiant appearance.
  • Reversible: If the result is not desired, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase.
  • Biocompatible: Since it is a natural component of the body, reactions are rare.

Hyaluronic Acid – Disadvantages:

  • It does not treat dynamic wrinkles.
  • Possible mild side effects: Slight swelling, redness or bruising, which subside quickly.

Botox – Advantages:

  • Effective smoothing of expression wrinkles: Ideal for wrinkles on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the eyes.
  • Quick process: The application is short and painless.
  • Preventive action: It can also be used in younger people to delay the appearance of new wrinkles.

Botox – Disadvantages:

  • Possible changes in expressions: If not applied correctly, it may temporarily affect facial expressions.
  • It does not treat static wrinkles.
  • Possible mild side effects: Bruises or headaches that disappear quickly.

These treatments offer unique results depending on your facial needs, and are often used in combination to achieve the best possible result.

Which treatment should you ultimately choose?

Whether you choose hyaluronic acid or Botox, both options are excellent ways to rejuvenate your facial appearance. The decision depends on your age, the type of wrinkles, the condition of your skin, and your expectations. The most important thing is to be properly informed and consult a qualified specialist, who will guide you appropriately.
